Bamboo publications by Chris Stapleton & collaborators

Publication by printing on paper was once considered the only effective means of distributing and publicising scientific results and knowledge for the benefit of mankind. Some consider this process to have now become excessively controlled by a profitable scientific publishing industry, which could even be exploiting scientists and restricting public access to scientific knowledge. Free online publication of books and articles (Open Access) is slowly becoming more common e.g. through the Biodiversity Heritage Library ‘Science has no borders’. It can greatly increase citation and consequently status, submissions, and advertising potential for journals, but reduces subscription income, requiring a new business model for publishers, reallocation of institutional journal subscription funds to open access publication fees, and a better solution for independent researchers.

In order to maximise access to publications resulting from my own research, which I consider should be global public goods, full, draft, or summary versions of most of my publications are reproduced here in PDF format. Much of the research was funded by international development or academic organisations in the hope that satisfactory dissemination of the results would be achieved. It should also be noted that under Article 17 of the Convention on Biological Diversity, effective data repatriation is an obligation after study of the plants of other countries, and making these publications available online is an attempt to live up to that expectation.

The publications are all still protected by copyright, and available only for personal ‘reasonable use’ under copyright law. Consider these as electronic reprints, or ‘Green OA self-archiving’.
