Bamboos of Bhutan: the Field Guide

First published in 1994, the field guide was a companion to a taxonomic enumeration of the bamboos of Nepal and Bhutan published in the Edinburgh Journal of Botany.

Fieldwork was undertaken from 1981 to 1992 through the Forestry Departments of the Royal Governments of Nepal and Bhutan, in conjunction with the UK international aid program, through VSO, DFiD (ODA), the Foresty Dept. of Aberdeen University, the Forestry Research Program of the University of Oxford, and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

Further fieldwork was undertaken in 1997, supported by the Ministry of Agriculture & Forests, the SNV Netherlands Development Organisation, the Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN), the Anglo-Hong Kong Trust, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

The version of Bamboos of Bhutan presented on this website is the product of these former investigations, updated by subsequent taxonomic results. Knowledge of the bamboos of the Himalayas still remains sketchy, and considerable work remains to verify the occurrence, determine the correct identification, and to refine knowledge of the characteristics and the distribution of the bamboos suggested here.

The Bamboos of Bhutan Facebook Group is now actively exploring Bhutan’s bamboos further. Join the Facebook Group to find out more and to contribute to knowledge of Bhutan’s bamboo resources.
